Michael A. Wells was born in north central Missouri. He has spent most of his life in the Kansas City Area. He is married and lives with his wife Cathy in Independence, Missouri. They have four grown children.
Michael has been intently involved in the art of writing poetry for over a decade and a reader at local open mics. He has been a member of the National Poetry Society as well as the Missouri State Poetry Society for about five years now and has served as the Vice President of a local chapter of of the society - K.C. Metro Verse for 3 years.
Michael has been an Associate Editor of VLQ and is presently editor of Rogue Poetry Review.
In 2005 Michael was named the runner up or Silver Missouri Senior Poet Laureate for his contest entry in the National Senior Poet Laureate contest for the poem "Coming Out". In 2004 he was an Honor Scroll recipient in the same competition. In 2006 his poem "Night Wishes" received a special award in the same competition and in 2007 he again received an Honor Scroll award for his poem "The Dove."
Michael's poetry has been published in several anthologies, the Independence Examiner, and more recently in such venues as The Boston Literary Magazine, The Park University Scribe, The Rockhurst Fine Arts Review, The Flask Review, and Autumn Sky Poetry.
He maintains a pluralist view of the art believing such diversity supports the freest expressions. Without this, art becomes defined by the whims of a few in society and as such becomes static.
When Michael is not writing and reading poetry, he enjoys baseball on all levels, but is especially a fan of the San Francisco Giants.
